What is yoga? "Yoga" is a Sanskrit word
which means "union": A physical, mental, and spiritual union. Yoga
originated in India as a way of teaching and preparing men to sit for
meditation.
Today, when most people think of yoga, they think of "stretching".
Although stretching is involved, "stretching" only refers to one of the
8 limbs of yoga: asanas (postures). The remaining 7 limbs are a process
of cultivating greater mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being than
physical activity.
On a practical level, yoga is about change and balance. By learning and
practicing asanas(postures) a transformation occurs. Greater strength,
stamina, flexibility, body awareness, sense of calm, and creativity are
just a few of the benefits or changes that occur. Because it is an
individual process, one can begin at any time. Whether it's a strong,
dynamic fast moving class or a more limited mobility chair yoga class,
it is the same.
